To connect to a RAM Arm, many custom-fit RAM Holders require the addition of a 1-inch ball base with a universal 4-hole AMPS pattern, the industry standard bolt configuration also found on nearly every OEM device holder these days. Equipping a factory made holder with one of these Bases will also make it compatible with the RAM mount system.
The descriptive text for individual RAM Holders will indicate whether it needs a base. In addition, you can also attach a base directly to any camera or video recorder via its standard 1/4-20 tripod socket. Satellite radios also use an industry standard bolt pattern and there is a base to fit. And for the ultimate in convenience, check out the RAM Quick-Release Base, which make it a snap to remove or transfer a device between motorcycles without having to readjust your arm each time.
Lastly, we have seen lots of creative, outside-the-box applications for RAM components. If you are contemplating such a project, or are willing to drill some holes on a flat surface, you could also use an AMPS pattern base as a sturdy mount.
